Brazil's presidential election will proceed to a runoff after far-right candidate Flávio Bolsonaro narrowly edged incumbent president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the first round, though he fell short of the outright majority needed to avoid a second vote.

With 99.9% of votes counted, Bolsonaro, 45, secured 47% of the vote and 56.1 million votes. Lula, 80, received 45.1% and 53.8 million votes. The two will face each other on October 25.

Bolsonaro is the son of Jair Bolsonaro, the disgraced former president. His stronger-than-expected performance in the first round prompted Lula to call the result "unexpected," according to The Guardian.
